Does hypnotherapy
really work?

Certified hypnotherapist credentials in the Minto therapy room — does hypnotherapy really work

Does the evidence support it?

The clinical research is mixed and varies by condition — there is no single body of evidence proving hypnotherapy works for everyone, and no responsible practitioner would claim otherwise. Results vary from person to person, as with any therapeutic approach.

What speaks most clearly in this practice is the pattern of referrals. The majority of new clients arrive through word of mouth, and it is common for former clients to return years later for a different concern entirely. It seems unlikely that someone would recommend the experience to family and friends, or return themselves, if it hadn’t genuinely helped.

It is a fair question, and an honest one deserves an honest answer rather than a sales pitch.

What hypnotherapy actually is

Hypnotherapy uses a state of deep relaxation and focused attention — similar to daydreaming — to help the mind become more open to positive suggestion and new perspectives. You remain aware and in control the entire time. It is not sleep, and it is nothing like stage hypnosis; it is a calm, professional, goal-directed process.

What it is used for

In a clinical setting, hypnosis is a therapeutic tool. It is used to help people achieve specific goals, make lasting behavioural changes, shift unhelpful thought patterns or perceptions, and generally improve quality of life — commonly for anxiety, trauma, confidence, phobias, pain management and stopping smoking or vaping.

Why the practitioner matters

Hypnotherapy is not a government-regulated profession in Australia, so anyone can call themselves a hypnotherapist regardless of training. Choosing a practitioner who is accredited with a recognised professional association — and who is transparent, answers your questions fully, and doesn't pressure you — makes a real difference to the experience and the outcome. See our FAQs for more on choosing the right hypnotherapist and what accreditation means.
